A little behind the scenes of yesterday’s set on location in Malibu, California. Notes on shooting in open sunlight: Using a 12×12 silk is a great tool to use to create open shade and light your subject without creating harsh shadows on the ground. However, creating cut shadows from the frame and stands is something you will have to work around in overhead direct sun. These silks fly if the wind picks up, so always make sure you have enough hands on set to monitor and weight the rollers. I found for this set up we ended up going both ways depending on the angle of the sun and tightness of the shot.
